Everyday since November 8, 2000, someone has been killed on a Texas road. When it comes to road deaths in big states, Texas has the second most incidents, just slightly behind Florida. This has Laura Ryan, a member of the Texas Transportation Commission saying this about traffic deaths; “I think as a state we’ve become very numb to it.” A scary thought to think when it comes to the deaths of thousands of people every year. In an interview, Ryan said; “This is probably one of the most deadly situations we have in the state, and it’s one of the most controllable situations we have in the state. Ninety percent of the deaths that we’ve had over the 19 years are preventable.”

12.7 people per 100,000 Texas residents died in 2018 from traffic accidents. More disturbing is that when we consider the time between 2010 to 2018, more people died on Texas roads than any other state. Safety advocacy groups are claiming we have a traffic death epidemic on our hands. But what is causing all of these deaths? The top two causes of road deaths are speed related, or involve someone under the influence of alcohol. But how are we going to stop these preventable deaths?

Luckily, word is getting out, and more people are aware of the dangers of drinking and driving. In fact, drinking and driving deaths have fell by 8.23%. In 2010, 34% of traffic deaths were due to drunk driving, now its 25%. Unfortunately, that number is still to high. However, it’s a good start to putting a stop to the problem. Even better news is that the Texas Transportation Commission has established a goal of eliminating all traffic deaths by 2050. While this is extremely ambitious, it’s comforting to know that the state agency is taking a serious concern in the matter. So far, the agency has put over $600 million to widening roads and upgrading highways to make them more safe over the course of the next two years. Other than road imporvements, its unclear on how the state plans on tackling this issue.
