Common Causes of Highway Accidents

Austin highway accidents are caused by a wide range of negligent behaviors. Common causes our attorneys see on Austin-area interstates and freeways include:

  • Speeding and aggressive driving: Drivers who exceed safe highway speeds reduce their reaction time and greatly amplify the severity of any crash.
  • Distracted driving: Texting, phone use, eating, GPS interaction, and other distractions cause drivers to miss hazards at highway speeds where every second matters.
  • Tailgating: Failure to maintain proper following distance causes chain-reaction pileups, especially in highway construction zones and stop-and-go traffic.
  • Drunk or drugged driving: Impaired drivers on Texas highways are a constant and deadly threat, particularly during late nights and holiday weekends.
  • Reckless lane changes and unsafe passing: Cutting off other vehicles, failing to signal, and unsafe merging cause dangerous sideswipe and multi-vehicle crashes.
  • Fatigued truck drivers: Commercial truck drivers operating beyond legal hours-of-service limits pose catastrophic risks on Texas highways, especially on overnight routes.
  • Failure to see motorcyclists: Motorcyclists are far more vulnerable on highways, and drivers who fail to check blind spots or yield to motorcycles can cause fatal accidents.
  • Poor vehicle maintenance: Tire blowouts, brake failures, and other mechanical problems, especially on commercial trucks, can cause a driver to lose control at highway speeds.

The Four-Second Rule

On US-77/83 and I-69E, both heavily used by commercial trucks, maintaining safe following distance is especially critical. Loaded 18-wheelers require significantly more stopping distance than passenger vehicles, and when drivers fail to respect that difference at highway speeds, the results can be catastrophic. The four-second rule requires at least 390 feet of following distance at 65 mph; trucks may need far more.

Safety experts recommend a minimum four-second following distance at highway speeds. To measure it: pick a fixed point on the road ahead, count the seconds from when the vehicle in front passes it until your vehicle passes the same point. If it’s less than four seconds, you’re too close. On highways with commercial truck traffic, six or more seconds may be warranted.

What to Do After a Highway Accident in Brownsville

If you’ve been involved in a highway accident in Brownsville, taking the right steps immediately after the crash can protect your health and your legal rights:

  • Call 911: Report the accident and request emergency medical services, even if you feel okay. Many serious injuries, including internal injuries and traumatic brain injuries, may not be immediately apparent.
  • Seek medical attention: Get evaluated by a medical professional as quickly as possible. Delay in treatment can harm both your health and your injury claim.
  • Document the scene: If it is safe to do so, photograph the vehicles, road conditions, skid marks, and any visible injuries.
  • Exchange information: Get the other driver’s name, insurance information, and license plate number. If a commercial truck is involved, get the carrier name, truck number, and driver’s CDL information.
  • Get witness information: Names and contact information from any bystanders who witnessed the crash can be invaluable.
  • Do not admit fault: Statements made at the scene can be used against you. Let the investigation determine fault.

Contact The Law Giant: Call (956) 982-1800 as soon as possible. Early legal intervention allows us to preserve evidence, interview witnesses, and begin building your case before critical information is lost.
