Sunday morning around 1:15, the San Antonio Sheriffs’ office was responding to a call of reckless driving. The reported driver was traveling Westbound on I-10 on the Eastbound lanes. Before authorities could arrive, the call was escalated to a major accident.

Once arriving at the scene, deputies found a sedan that had collided head-on with an 18-wheeler, This caused the truck to jackknife, right before the sedan burst into flames. Soon after, a second 18 wheeler arrived an crashed into the cab of the truck that had already been jackknifed. Unfortunately, the driver of the sedan and the jackknifed 18-wheeler was pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were identified as Hector Segura, age 54, and Olga Casas, age 57. The second 18-wheeler driver was not seriously injured. Currently, investigators are looking into whether alcohol had played a factor in the crash.

Often, those at fault for wrong-way accidents are intoxicated. Drunk driving makes up a significate portion of the causes of wrong-way driving. Another common cause is fatigued drivers. Usually, this happens late at night. The low visibility combined with the inability to focus can lead to this unfortunate situation. But this doesn’t mean these are the only causes. Even sober and wide awake drivers can cause these accidents.
