A California jury has ordered a trucking trailer manufacturer to pay $18.9 Million in damages after one of their trailers killed a 16-year-old boy. Riley Hein, a high school junior, was on his way to band practice. Suddenly, the truck driver veered into the teen’s lane, trapping his Honda Civic underneath the trailer. He was then dragged for half a mile, while is car caught on fire. 70% of his body was burned. He died at the scene.

The teens family argued that the manufacturer was negligent in the design of the trailer. Because it didn’t have any siding to stop this exact thing from happening. Something that most trailers do have. Utility Trailer Manufacturing, who was held responsible, said this would not be technologically or economically feasible. The jury disagreed. They awarded the family $42 million. However, they found that the truck driver was 55% responsible, while UTM was only 45% responsible. Since the driver was not named in the suit, the family only received 18.9 million from UTM.
