After a recent safety trial done by the FDA, a new warning has been issued in regards to the weight-loss drug lorcaserin (Belviq.) According to the study, this drug can increase a person’s risk of developing pancreatic, lung, and colon cancer. Now, lorcaserin (Belviq, Belviq XR) is under a voluntary withdrawal from the market. The FDA made this request after determining the risks outweigh the benefits. Lorcaserin was designed to aid in weight loss for those patients struggling with obesity and other health issues related to being overweight. This drug works by reducing a person’s sense of hunger.

The FDA initially approved lorcaserin in 2012 and required the manufacturer to conduct a clinical trial to evaluate the risks associated with the drug. Following this trial, they have determined the drug is not safe. Those who take it on a regular basis have a significant risk of developing some forms of cancer. If you are in the possession of Belviq tablets, you should dispose of them safely. The best way to do this is to hand them over to an official drug take-back location. Those who can not access one of these locations are advised to do the following.
