The Japanese carmaker, Nissan, is recalling over 450,000 vehicles over concerns that they might catch on fire. According to the recalls, it is possible that brake fluid can leak and ignite. Because of this risk, Nissan is asking owners to park their vehicles outside, and away from any structures if the antilock brake light comes on for more than 10 seconds. Apparently, the antilock brake actuator pump can leak fluid onto the circuit board, and cause an electrical short. According to documents filed with the National Highway Trafic Safety Administration, there haven’t been any reports of fires or injuries due to this most recent recall.
This has been the third recall for the same problem in recent years. The company simply keeps expanding the number of cars and models affected by the problem. It started in 2016 when 120,000 cars were recalled after a 2016 Maxima caught fire. Then in 2018, 215,000 more cars were added to the recall. In both recalls, Nissan dealers inspected the vehicles, but only replaced some of the pumps. Now, dealers will have to replace more pumps. Notices of the recall will be sent on December 2nd. The affected vehicles so far are Nissan Murano SUV and Maxima sedans from 2016 to 2018. Some Pathfinders and Infiniti QX60 from 2017 to 2019 are also affected.
