Types of Abuse in Nursing Homes
Whether the harm is intentional or the result of negligence, nursing home residents in Laredo and throughout Webb County can experience three main types of mistreatment:
Physical Abuse or Neglect
Physical mistreatment can occur when a facility fails to meet a resident’s basic medical and personal care needs. This might include not providing timely access to a doctor, failing to dispense medications properly, ignoring injuries, or allowing preventable conditions like bedsores to develop.
Improper use of restraints – still a serious concern in some Texas facilities – is another form of physical abuse. Neglect may also involve failing to assist with hygiene, nourishment, mobility, or other essential daily needs.
Emotional Abuse
Residents may suffer emotional harm when subjected to yelling, insults, threats, intimidation, isolation, or humiliation by staff or caregivers. Emotional abuse often goes unnoticed, but in Laredo facilities it can be just as damaging as physical harm, leading to anxiety, depression, withdrawal, or fear.
Financial Exploitation
Financial abuse is also common in elder care settings. This can involve staff or administrators pressuring a resident to change bank accounts, beneficiary designations, life insurance policies, or estate documents. It may also include unauthorized use of credit cards, theft of personal property, or manipulation of residents who may be confused or vulnerable.
