Laredo Reckless Driving: What to Know
- Loop 20 and Cuatro Vientos Road are enforcement targets. Laredo police run a TxDOT-funded speed operation there.
- Breaking a traffic law can prove negligence. Texas courts have long applied negligence per se to traffic violations.
- Laredo had 12 traffic deaths in 2025. TxDOT counted 15 in Webb County.
- The reckless driver’s insurance is the usual source of payment. Your own coverage can fill gaps.
Speed Enforcement on Laredo Roads
In July 2025, KGNS reported that the Laredo Police Department launched the second year of Operation Slow Down, a TxDOT-funded effort to target speeding drivers along Loop 20 and Cuatro Vientos Road.
TxDOT’s 2025 data counts 12 traffic deaths in the City of Laredo. Laredo police have also said the city sees fewer street takeovers than larger Texas cities, but speeding remains a constant danger.
How a Broken Traffic Law Proves Fault
Texas courts use a rule called negligence per se. When a driver breaks a safety law and causes the kind of harm the law was meant to prevent, the violation can establish that they were negligent. In a 2025 opinion, the Supreme Court of Texas noted that most of its negligence per se cases have involved traffic statutes.
Common violations in reckless driving crashes include:
- Speeding or driving too fast for conditions
- Running a red light or stop sign
- Unsafe lane changes and following too closely
- Racing, which is a felony when it injures someone under § 545.420

Common Questions
Laredo Reckless Driving FAQs
What is negligence per se?
It is a rule that lets a broken safety law, such as a traffic law, establish that a driver was negligent when the violation caused the kind of harm the law was meant to prevent. It can make fault much easier to prove.
Do I need a police report for a reckless driving claim?
It helps a great deal. The report records the scene, the drivers, any citations and witness names. Involved people can buy a copy from TxDOT, and we request it as part of every case.
What if the reckless driver was ticketed?
A citation or conviction is useful evidence, but it does not settle your civil claim. The insurer may still dispute fault or the value of your injuries, so we build the case with all the evidence.
How long do I have to file a claim after a Laredo crash?
Usually two years from the crash for an injury claim. Video and vehicle data can be lost within days or weeks, so contact a lawyer early.
