Why You Should Wear A Seatbeat

We all know the rules, wear your seat belt or you could be at risk for a hefty ticket. Is that the only reason why you should bother? Are seat belt laws just another way for the government to convince otherwise law abiding citizens to turn over their money? Even though we do question some of the things drivers can receive tickets for, a seat belt is not one of them.

Seatbelts were originally banned by automobile makers, even though the designers knew they could save lives. Why were they banned? Well, the reason may actually shock you. Car manufacturers felt that adding seatbelts to their cars might make consumers feel that cars were not safe. At a time when everyone did not own a car, introducing fear into the mix was probably not a good idea.

The truth of the matter is that cars are not safe. Our vehicles today travel at speeds greater than 100 miles per hour. Drivers and passengers can be ejected from cars through windshields as the result of high speed collisions. For many victims of car accidents, seat belts are the one thing that saved their lives.

Even in car accidents that are at moderate speed, a seatbelt can make a huge difference. 35 miles per hour may not seem like that fast from the inside of a car, but when you are being ejected from a car at that speed it could cost you your life. Even if you are able to safely brace yourself in the vehicle, your knees may violently push into the dash, or your head may hit the steering wheel.

A seatbelt is there to hold your body in place. If your car is moving, you want that protection.

What about if you aren’t moving?

If you are sitting in a car you should have your seatbelt on. It may seem like we are paranoid, but there are many reasons why I say this. A parked or stopped vehicle can easily still be hit by a moving vehicle. It is unfortunate when this happens, but it is even more so when the injuries are more serious than they need to be.

Taking off your seatbelt because you are at a stop light or even parked can be a risky move. If another car runs through the stop light or runs into you at high speed, your seatbelt may be what saves you from a life ending ejection.

But there are airbugs!

Airbags cannot take the place of a seatbelt. They can increase the effectiveness of a seatbelt, but when an accident does happen you will be glad you wore both.

There really isn’t a good reason not to wear a seatbelt. If you are sitting in a car, give yourself some piece of mind and click it in.
